Not Irwin Allen nor Ichabod Crane. However, I am Iain (M.) Banks, the Scottish author of both science fiction and literary fiction (as well as an outstanding guide to whisky throughout the regions where it is produced), who died of cancer two weeks ago at the tragically young age of 51. During Gershwin’s time in Paris, he sought out many contemporary ‘classical’ composers, including Ravel, Stravinsky, Nadia Boulanger, Francis Poulenc. The story is told that Gershwin asked Stravinsky if he (Gershwin) could study composition with him. Stravinsky asked “Forgive me, Mr. Gershwin, but how much money do you make in a year?” When Gershwin told him that his Broadway shows were yielding him a six figure per year income, Stravinsky smiled ironically and said “Perhaps I would do better to study with you!” 3. is **Franz Schubert** , whose nickname was ‘Schwämmerl’, meaning ‘Little Mushroom’ and implying that he was short and fat.
