I’d say prose fiction is novels, novellas and short stories. Kids’ books are a gray area.

IQs:

1. Did Kevin Corcoran play you in a Disney movie about a kid who ran away and joined the circus?
2. Did you write _The Drawing of the Dark_?
3. Did you win a Tony award for playing Molly in _The Unsinkable Molly Brown_?

IQs:

1. Were you a Scottish civil engineer, so famous for building roads, bridges, and canals that you were dubbed “The Colossus of Roads”?

2. Did you die from eating tainted strawberries?

3. Are you punished by hunger and thirst, with delicious food and drink eternally just out of your reach?

Also no for poetry, even if it’s an entire book written as a poem, like _Out of the Dust_.

Where would epics like _Beowulf_ or the _Illiad_ or _The Divine Comedy_ fall, then? In my mind, there’s a distinction between even a long poem like _The Rime of the Ancient Mariner_, and a verse epic like _The Inferno._

ETA: that is, I wouldn’t think of, say, Sir Lancelot from _Le Morte d’Arthur_ as a “character from a poem”.
