# Botticelli:  Late June, 2012

A question about the rules: Would it be legal for the answer to be a person whose middle initial is “T?”

1. I am male.
2. I am currently dead.
3. I was a real person.
4. I am American.
5. My last name does not begin with T.
6. I died after 1900.
7. I am not noted for my contribution to The Fine Arts.
8. I died before 1950.
9. I am not famous for athletic achievement.
10. I am not aware of any film made about my life.
11. I personally was not involved in politics, but some of my work was cited by political figures.
12. I was noted for my academic work.
13. My work was not in the hard sciences, such as chemistry, physics, math, etc.
14. I was not an economist.
15. I was not associated with an Ivy League university, and I am unaware of any work done at such an institution.
16. I died before 1920 (so, I died between 1900 and 1920).
17. I was not a political scientist, although, as I said, my work influenced and was cited by politicians.

I’m not Ted Williams or Joe Tinker (of Tinker to Evers to Chance fame). A DQ for Hughes wife.

I will say that I did not pick someone such as Buford **T.** Pusser, where only the initial is **T**. I will say that the name I am commonly referred to has a full name starting with ‘T’, either as my first or my middle name.

Yes! I am Alfred Thayer Mahan, historian and lecturer at the United States Naval War College, whose book _The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783_ was hailed as the foremost geopolitical essay of the 19th Century, and whose ideas on the effect of sea power on geopolitical outcomes influenced not only Theodore Roosevelt, but European leaders such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Alfred Tirpitz, and Jackie Fisher.
