With one exception, all of the fictional characters I can think of that are associated with NYC either are cops/detectives or are best known from TV. And that one exception doesn’t have a ‘D’ name. ---

I have a very hard time picturing Martin Lawrence as this character\*, but… are you professional thief John Dortmunder from Donald Westalke’s \*\*\*The Hot Rock \*\*\*(among other books)? (I’ve never read any of the books, but know of the character from the Robert Redford movie.) - Then again, I can’t picture Whoopi Goldberg as professional thief Bernie Rhodenbarr, either! ---
