Crap, I just realised that being born before 1960 rules out the suspect in the Meredith Kercher case, even if I could remember his name.

My last DQ: did the criminal activity (first) take place pre-2000?

Depending on the answer, it may be worth someone else trying to narrow down when the criminal activity received wide publicity. I figure the longer ago it was, the more high-profile it must have been, or the converse.

I don’t think I’m going to get this one, but I’ll do a quick summary of my thoughts in case it helps anyone else.

So, we’re looking for a living Italian man, Signor S_____, who is 60+ years old (or nearly so), who is famous for a one-off event that occurred since 2000 in which criminal activity was involved, but he was not the perpetrator (this is a slight assumption on my part based on the phrasing of the answer to 18). However, he is not a lawyer, judge, or politician. In addition, it wasn’t a white-collar crime, so we can rule out those Italian favourites of bribery and corruption.

Final thought - could it be the owner or curator of an artwork that was stolen? I can’t think of any major Italian art heists in the last 20 years, but then it’s not the sort of thing I’d necessarily have noticed.

I’m out - good luck, guys!

DQ: Did the criminal activity result in injury or death?

out of DQs

All I’m coming up with is the Mafia, and I don’t have a name in mind. Or, it could be the guy’s in law enforcement, and known that way.

OK, tawk amongst yourselves. You may each ask an earned “Are you Firstname Lastname?” question by, let’s say, 7pm EST Sat.

I like the law enforcement idea but I’m not coming up with anything. Cops don’t tend to become famous.

Maybe a vigilante? I’m not coming up with anything yet either.

I’m running into walls on this. The only Italian surname I can think of offhand is Sacco, of Sacco & Venzetti, but he was executed.

Not a bad guess, but it’s not Sacco (the era isn’t right, either).

I have no guess at all. I’ll pass.

Yeah, I’m stumped too.

Right, then. I am

Francesco Schettino

The incompetent, and then cowardly, captain of the ill-fated cruise ship Costa Concordia, which he ran aground off the Italian coast in 2012, killing 32: Francesco Schettino - Wikipedia

Following the link, that’s an interesting story, but I didn’t hear of it at the time, and don’t know him.

First I’ve heard of him.

Hmm. We even had several threads on him and the wreck:

What say you, DC and MM?

Ah, nice one - it was all over the news over here at the time, in particular that his name means “roller skate” in Italian, so I think it was definitely gettable for me, I just didn’t bring the incident to mind. Well played and go again, as far as I’m concerned - sorry, team!
