Yes, Knowed Out, that has always been my understanding re: “American.” With Native Americans it gets a little trickier, though, depending upon dates and citizenship status.

Gaaaah ok, how about “American?” means “Born in or became a citizen of the USA, inclusive of its military bases, possessions, and embassies, or is commonly identified as being from the USA even though other nationalities may apply?”

In the past we have said “American” when we meant a U.S. citizen, but “American (for some definitions of American)” when it was something else, including Canadian, Mexican, etc., etc.
