Hints: 1. I appeared in a trilogy of novels. 2. I am strongly associated with a specific American city and a specific ethnicity. 3. My creator lobbied shamelessly and unsuccessfully for the Nobel Prize. Regardless, my trilogy appears on most critics’ lists of the greatest novels of the 20th century. ---
