Aaaaand there we are… One “Are you Firstname Lastname” DQ each for the three of you.
Hmmm. A nonfictional English male, dead, first name Francis (and I already guessed Bacon, Urquhart and Drake), born between 1850 and 1920. Businessman/entrepreneur, but not famous for that. Not known for the arts, politics, the military, science, crime, or the way he died.
Are you former Foreign Secretary Francis Pym?
Are you the modern figurist painter Francis Bacon?
A sports figure, perhaps. Nevertheless, I’m stumped. Pass.
I am not.
I am not.
I am (of sorts).
I first made my name in aviation, flying solo from England to Australia in 1929-30, and in 1931 becoming the first person to fly solo from New Zealand to Australia (using a Gypsy Moth fitted with floats). During WW II I served as Chief Navigation Instructor at the RAF’s Central Flying School. After the war I opened a map-publishing business, which continued on for forty years after my death, and took up sailing. I won the first solo transatlantic race, in 1960, in my yacht Gipsy Moth III, and am best known for having sailed Gipsy Moth IV around the world in 1966-67 – the first man to sail single-handed around the world going west to east.
I was knighted for this, and am Sir Francis Chichester, KBE.
Okay, I’ve heard of Chichester. Good job, SCA!
Yup, I’ve heard of him too. Good one.
Let’s hope this one isn’t too obscure…
I am C.
