President Washington visited Boston in Oct. 1789 and Hancock insisted that he outranked Washington, and that Washington should thus call on him first. Washington didn’t, public opinion turned against Hancock for being rude, and after two days Hancock grudgingly called on the President at the inn where he was staying.
Was a hotel clerk unimpressed when you signed in? - The story goes that Herbert Hoover, long after leaving office, stayed at a hotel overnight and wasn’t recognized by the young clerk. The clerk, seeing Hoover’s name in the hotel registry book, asked if he was related to either J. Edgar Hoover or the vacuum-cleaner company’s CEO, and when Hoover said he wasn’t, the clerk said, “That’s too bad. We like having celebrities stay here.”
