Ah. **James Cook** was indeed who I was - I’m now doubly annoyed that I could not come up with a murdered/drowned person from either real life or fiction whose name connected with the letter ‘J’. Congrats to Elendil’s Heir. You see my dilemma over the military question - while Cook was a Captain in the Royal Navy and could not have accomplished his explorations without his military involvement, ‘military’ would tend to mislead people in the direction of 'officer who had a noteworthy victory or defeat, rather than ‘first person to have seen all seven continents’. ---
