Were you a Norwegian diplomat who won a top international post? - Trygve Lie, who became the first UN Secretary-General.
Were you often shown in your book-jacket portraits wearing a Marine Corps hat? - Tom Clancy.
Did you follow another candidate of the same ethnic background and from the same state four years later, seeking the same post? - Paul Tsongas running for President in '92, after Mike Dukakis in '88.
Dunno who this French painter is. I yield my earned DQs to others, one per player.
I read the rules on Wikipedia, but I’m not really sure if there are rules unique to the Dope’s version. I looked and found a lot of threads, but not much in terms of specific rules or conventions.
As Prof P said, the winner of the game hosts the next round.
Games go until 20 DQs have been answered (one or two more, if the host is so inclined). If no one has come up with the right answer by then, each person who was awarded a DQ during the game gets to ask one DQ in the format “Are you Firstname Lastname?” If no one gets it right, the host reveals his identity and starts the next game.
Sitting Bull’s first initial is S and his last initial is B. Similarly, Crazy Horse’s initials are CH.
Names are played in the form they’re best known. For instance, Steven Grover Cleveland is a G or a C, not an S, and Thomas Woodrow Wilson is a W, not a T. If someone’s name is normally used in full, like John Philip Sousa, or if he is known by first and middle initials, like D H Lawrence, it’s fine to use the middle name/initial for an IQ, but it’s considered somewhat unfair to use it for a game.
“Are you American?” means “Are you from the US?” If I’m playing someone from elsewhere in the Americas, I’ll respond “American, for certain values of ‘American.’” YMMV.
That covers most of the house rules, I think…
IQ1: Were you a cavalry general whose brother was awarded the Medal of Honor twice?
IQ2: Were you the current Earl of Wessex’s maternal grandfather?
IQ3: Did the mayor of Chicago promise to give you a poke in the snoot if you ever visited his city?
The other major house rule is that there can be no research to answer questions or ask them. The only exception is that you can research the character you’re hosting to make sure your answers are correct.
We also don’t always ask our entire allotment of DQs. If I managed to amass 3 DQs, I might ask just 1, then say “2 DQs in reserve.”
No googling. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the answers to the questions. It just makes the game go quicker.
IQ1: Are you a glam rocker who sang sang “Rock and Roll, Parts One and Two.”?
IQ2: Were you the announcer for Laugh-In and the voice of Space Ghost?
IQ3: Did you portray the title character in The Buddy Holly Story?
Yes, I think those are all of the SDMB Botticelli house rules. Thanks, all.
IQs:
Did you have a dog named Nelson and a horse named Sweetlips?
Were you nicknamed, among other things, “Pap” and “Old Slow Trot”?
A man, did you tell a reporter, “I save my feelings for Mrs. [his last name]”?
