**Scotticher** , I can’t figure out why you felt the need to post this rant. If this person is as ignorant as you claim then why does it matter to you? A few years back, I reported to a manager that was extremely left wing and very anti-American. She would go into tirades about rednecks, Republicans and the U.S. Army every now and then. Unfortunately, she had a habit of corralling the nearest person to make sure they agreed with her. Whenever I was that person, I would simply node my head accordingly and say “yes” whenever required to do so. I knew she was ignorant and full of hatred, therefore whatever she said was meaningless to me. 😉 ---

However, since I am here (courtesy to an email wherein I got accused of eating “Ghost Posties” for breakfast 🙂 ) I’ll give you my take on what you said. If you don’t make it clear you feel racist behaviour is wrong, you are condoning it…which in practical terms means you are allowing the racist to think that you agree with their position. Personally, I don’t want anyone EVER to think that I agree with racism. Of ANY kind. (And I was using YOU in the collective sense, not you as in YOU you…) I have actually had to deal with this, and at first I spoke up every time I heard remarks I considered to be racist. After a bit, I realized that the person was now “baiting” me and I decided that I had A) Made my position clear…I thought these comments were racist, and that racism is WRONG. B) There was no point in speaking up any more, as it was no longer accomplishing anything. If it ever DID. C) I still had to find a way to NOT compromise my beliefs. I finally decided that silence was the best response. I quit acknowledging the remarks. When they were made, I didn’t SAY anything, or in any way physically acknowledge that they had been made, unless you think looking sad or occasionally shaking my head qualifies. Which it does, but hey…I’m only human. All this occurred years ago, and at the time I think it was the best way to go. NOW things have changed, and I don’t know exactly what I would do. I just skimmed this thread, but I read lots of sound advice. I would like to say that the other day a very dear friend of my father…an elderly man, a very NICE man, made a remark that appalled me. I took a few deep breaths and said “Jonathan, you DO realize that that is a very hurtful and offensive thing to say about homosexuals, don’t you?” He looked at me like I had grown two heads, but then we had a nice little discussion about it. I don’t know if he learned anything, but I hope he DID. And since he IS a nice man, I doubt he will use that term again, at least without thinking about our conversation. I don’t know…I can’t change the world, but maybe I can give someone in my little corner of it something to think about. One can only hope. Welcome to the board!
