I have even heard of places that give out these books for free. Your children are probably exposed to them.
I’m not really sure why charging her is controversial; she decided to shoot someone with a gun, and he died from the bullet wound. Shooting people in the chest is something that I agree with being illegal, so I have no problem with her going to prison. If her judgement is that bad, her kids are better off in someone else’s custody. Fame seeking can cause people to shoot other people, and this will at least serve as a deterrent if other people come up with stupid stunts.
Please don’t give the NRA any ideas.

I can’t believe some of you. You think she deserves no sentence? She shot someone in the chest! What if she’d missed the book? She committed a felony, and should do time.
She should also be charged with criminal stupidity, but since that isn’t a recognized crime, we’ll have to let that one go. People - test first! How hard would it be to try firing though the book with nothing behind? You can afford a desert eagle, but can’t afford two books?

I have a problem getting from “she committed a serious crime” to “she should go to prison.” I don’t think one necessarily follows from the other. prison is a terrible place and should be reserved for people who really need to be there. Without knowing much about this woman, she did a very stupid thing, but I doubt she’s a danger to the community to the extent she needs to be incarcerated. Give her probation and don’t let her own any guns.

If she’s incarcerated, someone else will care for the kids. Almost anyone would be better. The girl (not woman) is not capable of being a decent mother. The children are not safe with her. She could decide to bathe them in bleach to kill germs or to test their fire-resistant pajamas.
If she’s not incarcerated, she will almost certainly have more children.
Stupidity is not a defense for killing someone.
If a man had shot and killed a woman under the same circumstances, would we feel the same sympathy for him? Would we think that he should get very light or no punishment?

Unless you can show me she lived in some alternate reality, or has some for of mental dysfunction, any adult knows that bullets go through things, walls, floors, cars, people, reader’s digest, etc.

I guess I’d call stupidity an extenuating circumstance in the sentencing. We don’t have much else to do but jail her in this circumstance, though I’d keep the time low, but still enough to make sure she spends at least 6 months behind bars. Lots of mental health and parental ability evaluation has to go on also.
Apparently nobody ever watched the show except me but when Dr. Becker’s young, poor, stupid patients got pregnant he’d say “…yet you need a license to sell real estate”. Not that it would matter,I think you need a permit for a handgun in Minnesota, but that didn’t prevent this.
The article says she told 911 that she “accidentally” shot him, although it sounds like the opposite of accidental. Another article says he was her boyfriend of five years, which meant they’ve been dating since he was 17 and she was 14 years old.
I’m just pleased to hear that young people are still interested in books.
