Braces on Thursday, job interview on Friday! Help!

I’ve never heard of anasthesia when getting braces put on! Getting them put on didn’t hurt; the bands around the molars were unpleasant, but nothing really hurt until an hour or two after I left the office. They gave me these pills to dry out my mouth that worked all too well.

Don’t worry, no needles. And I am a major dental phobe. I AM worse about it since I had braces, though; I guess when every time somebody looks at your teeth they then hurt for several days sets you up to be nervous about ANYBODY looking at your teeth, ever!

:smack: “anaesthesia”

I DO know how to spell, dang it.

Could be worse; apparently I had it easy compared to when my mom had braces and they put bands on ALL your teeth. Eeek!

The first day was all about taking pictures and making molds.
I came in the next week and they put spacers in. They feel like you have something stuck in between your teeth-kinda like corn or something.
Then he put in the top braces, but only a few of them. It wasn’t until much later that he put in the bottom ones.

I,too, have never had much dental work prior to this. I think it’s better in a way, because there aren’t preconceived notions of pain or what have you.

The Dentist told me to use Tylenol because aspirin inhibits tooth movement. If your pain is only relieved by aspirin, then that’s better than nothing.

I can honestly say that I never felt much pain until the lower ones were put in and the upper ones were tightened. On my first day, I was able to talk normally.

My best friend has been a waterpick. My upper braces look like a permanent retainer. Food is constantly getting stuck under it.

And quite obviously, I do not. DOH!

Just seconding what Ethilrist said.

for the first week after I got my braces on, I couldn’t say one sentance without spitting on the person I was talking to. I also couldn’t eat a banana, let alone barbecued meat!

I think that before you get to the bussiness part, tell him that you just got them on yesterday… tell him to expect you to embarrass yourself. You probably won’t be to coherant, either… its difficult to talk with a metre of wire in your mouth.
Oh, and if you DO end up eating the barbecue… don’t smile, or in any way reveal your teeth until you can sneak into the bathroom with a toothbrush. There will be enough food beetween the brackets for a snack later.

A side note… I find that if I chew gum the minute I get out of the dentists office for my monthly appointment, it doesn’t hurt near as bad as it usually would. And braces also give you an excuse to pig out on icecream. It brings down thesweling and such.

Oh SHOOT ! DANGIT! ARRRRRRRRGH!

I should just have left it as it was.

I just got braces about a month ago ,XJET, and they didn’t add the spacers til my sencond or third appt. and I just got the metal anchors today. Up until now its been fine. A little ache here and there but these anchor peices bite the big one.

I also need “slenderizing”. Anyone ever have that and how painful is it???

I agree with the group. The spacers are more painful. They move in a few days what your braces move in months. If you already have gaps between the back teeth you won’t need spacers. They need the gap to put the bands (metal tubes) around your back teeth. They attach the wires to these bands. If the orthodontist hasn’t done anything with your teeth yet, and you have some crowding then you probably won’t get the metal stuff yet. He’ll be putting the spacers in. It took several appointments before they finished putting everything in. They put in the top first. But only the bands. Then the brackets and the wire. Then the bottom bands. Then the brackets and the wire. Took a few trips.

Don’t worry about the BBQ. There is absolutely no way you will be able to take one single bite of meat. No way. You will only be eating soup. Period. When I first got braces, I could eat NOTHING at all. Oranges hurt my teeth. Banannas hurt my teeth. Pasta sure hurt my teeth. I am very sensitive though. If you can, I would reschedule. My orthodontist wouldn’t give me a prescription but Advil works great. At night when my teeth hurt I sometimes use a sleep aid like Nyquil, only for a day or two after the tightenings. Anbesol does nothing for me. I don’t understand that stuff. The pain is at the root guys. Anbesol works on the surface.

My orthodontist told me that the wire tightens with body temperature. So if the pain is too much swirl some cold water around the mouth for a bit to loosen the wire. I usually put hot water in there though. I want it to be more tight, not less tight. The faster my teeth move the better. I’m too old already for braces. I want these things off! The sooner the better.

If your orthodontist is like mine he’ll have disposable toothbrushes. Just take one, break the handle off and keep it in your pocket or purse. Then you’ll have a teeny toothbrush wherever you go. Every time you go to the orthodontist, get a new disposable toothbrush. Shoot you’re paying how many thousands for this. You should get a couple dozen toothbrushes out of the deal, right?

There’s no anaesthesia. It’s all done with glue. The pain comes after the appointment.
