**RickJay:** As valid as his point may be, and I don’t fully subscribe (as I had thought I’d made obvious), there is no way on God’s green earth that **BG** deserves the level of abuse he was subjected to. At most, we’re talking about a relatively minor point of Board propriety. No way he deserves to be nibbled to death by guttersnipes. ---

The folks who are attacking are NOT engaging in a circle jerk or a stroke fest, but the people who are defending him ARE doing so. It sounds to me as if any random group of attackers could accuse any group of defenders of being engaged in a circle jerk/stroke fest. ---

Is that what people are supposed to do — pick certain posters that they will always support or oppose no matter what? Sometimes you post things that are just [incredibly edifying](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=8906781&postcount=198). When I see posts that have edified me, I acknowledge them, whether they’re from you or [someone else](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=8958084&postcount=66) I barely know. When I think you’ve crossed a line the other way, I say that as well. Same same for anyone else. I’m not your enemy, Luc. If you would drop your shield, you would find that I’m the friend who’s always honest with you. I’ll tell you if I think the dress makes you look fat. You have an extraordinary capacity for insightfulness. Far more than I have, and more than most other people I’ve seen around here. I must admit to a certain disappointment when I see you spend five wasted posts sniping at John with well constructed zingers. But I can understand why that might not matter to you. It’s more fun to entertain, and there’s always a set of people who will respond with cheers and kudos when the arrow hits the heart dead center. And frankly, for me it’s always worth the wait because when you decide to be uplifting, you have no peer. Lots of people do well with the zingers. I think I do pretty well myself sometimes with the killer one-liners. The difference between you and me is that when you’re on your up-side, you’re head and shoulders above me. Your expository skills dwarf my own. I guess I just hate looking up to see something wonderful that turns out to be bird poo. Every bird can drop a turd, but no one can soar like you. ---
