And yes he was presumably making a joke, but jokes can be racist and can be a form of hate speech, particularly depending on the context.
If we were discussing atrocities committed against Middle Eastern Jews and after someone mentioned the burning of Synagogues and murdering of Rabbis and let’s say Red Fury, then said “So, what’s wrong with that” does anyone doubt for two seconds he wouldn’t have gotten slapped hard and if he hadn’t lots of people would be screaming he should have been?
OK. But note that he didn’t get an actual warning for that-- just a mod note.
The other one was in the Pit, and it didn’t garner any moderator action at all.
That’s why several of us were saying on that one he got off quite lightly.
Had he made such a joke about Jews, blacks, or possibly Muslims in a comparable context I suspect he’d have been lucky if all he received was a warning rather than being dinged for hate speech.
I’m glad it’s just a suspension, because I don’t get over to Elections very consistently. If I have to insert plugs for proportional representation in every remotely relevant thread all by myself, it will not be quite timely.
More seriously, I like **BG **and am grateful to him for being such a presence on this board. Seems like a decent sort.

It may have been intended as a joke, and was said in the Pit, but that’s still pretty tacky. “Pedophilia” is a mischaracterization - the girl was 17. But fantasizing about the inappropriate comments made to a victim of sexual abuse is right there.

I have to agree with this. BrainGlutton didn’t threadshit and certainly didn’t insult the poster, he was discussing the Original Post, which is even more clear given that he quoted Subterraneanus. Whether or not BrainGlutton deserved a suspension for other comments that may or may not have been cited in the announcement, this incident seems unfairly aimed at him.
