Pretty sure he thinks this kind of crap makes for ‘edgy’ humour or commentary. I think we’ve all known people like this in real life. Quick to say, 'yeah, sorry I didnt _really_ mean it like _that!_, but clearly none the wiser nor better mannered no matter how often they are called out for it. I think people like this just get used to making their lame excuse so often they manage to convince themselves it actually _does_ undo the offence or impression left. People like this never really learn you can’t really take back horrid things you say or the damage they do. It’s true what they say, people show you who they really are all the time. Your job is to recognize that it IS who they really are, instead of being taken aback. ---

Bryan Eckers, Vinyl Turnip and elucidator can pull it off. Brainglutton can’t: he needs to stop. I’m sympathetic to frustrated comedians. This is a friendly warning: BG is in the quarry. My main restraint is that I made a conscious choice to register using my real name. On balance, it’s worked out well for me - though I have any number of comments that I now regret, I don’t think I’ve ever called for a minor celebrity’s death-by-public-defilement. At some point, I must have said something along the lines of “such-and-such TV show would be improved if such-and-such actor were killed by such-and-such” but no examples come to mind. I know of statements I’ve made that got largely negative responses, but few of them were intended to be funny. As an incidental note, I recently visited New York City and frankly the urine smell was pretty damn pervasive through the streets and subways. I can vaguely picture myself suggesting Hurricane Sandy gave the city a needed washing, and I like gallows humour generally, but not in a thread where people are passing on updates about ongoing and widespread damage and power outages. In a thread about an _anniversary_ of Sandy, I could see myself referring to “new waterfront property” or something hopefully more clever that that. Anyway, there’s no formula. I try to avoid doubling-down on the stupid, though - a joke that bombs isn’t going to recover if I try to criticize the critics. I don’t know if BrainGlutton ever does this; it’s my general opinion that nobody should. As an afterthought, an earlier post of mine in this thread reminded me [a post I wrote in 2008,](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9641306&postcount=36) in parody of a now-banned-poster’s overwrought style. Even _I_ didn’t get the joke for a while (that is to say, I recall revisiting the post several months after writing it and was baffled by my own writing - I later remembered what I’d been referencing). The joke is actually pretty lame, I don’t mind admitting. Many of my jokes are. The gems, I treasure. ---

Regarding prison rape humour, just today I got an e-mail alert that someone had responded to a comment I’d written on [a YouTube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ4c5atUjsE) over a year ago and had since completely forgotten. At the time, I was going through a sovereign citizen/freeman phase (that is to say, I was searching out and derisively commenting on SovCit/Freeman YouTube vids, which wore off when it became obvious how futile such effort is). How often does one get appropriate context to write the following sentence: This frog’s advice will get you raped in prison. ---
