If it’s a USB mouse like most people like to use with a laptop. then the SUB link is bad. Try plugging and unplugging. You probably tried that already too. If it’s not a USB mouse, find one and try it to see if it works.

If the failed mouse is the mouse pad, then this is totally different. You may indeed have a hardware failure covered by warranty. If you left the laptop running while sitting on a bed, it may have overheated because the air vents are on the bottom. I extended the legs on mine to give it more air. The system should have protected itself and shut down, but who knows.

So that’s all I know. Try stuff an post back. Someone will have a clue.

> Going forward, a netbook might be a safer alternative to a laptop in the future. They’re generally less powerful, but they’re also a lot cheaper. Not quite disposable, but you can afford to replace them a lot more frequently. Just make sure that the netbook fits her needs, and you’re golden. As a bonus, talk up the advantages of the netbook (“It’s cute! It’s light! It’s portable!”) rather than selling it as a cheaper item that can be destroyed more frequently.

Oddly a netbook is generally quite a bit more sturdy in real world use than a typical notebook. As it’s smaller and lighter falls and impacts are less hazardous than they would be to larger notebook, The MOST delicate notebooks are the 17 inch units as these are fairly heavy with large glass areas. A drop or fall with those and they are often done for.

The ones that use solid state hard drives are even better.

Good point. And many (but not all) netbooks use solid state drives instead of hard drives, so they’re even more impact resistant.
