Brandy, you’re a fine girl. But when did you live?

That seems about right. Definitely a little younger. Maybe a smidge longer hair. But he wears a black peacoat regardless of the weather conditions.

I kind of imagine Brandy looking a little like Candice Night.

And her SO Ritchie Blackmore could probably pass for a sailor.

The sailor is Kris Kristofferson, in his late thirties, sporting a beard.

And Brandy was Sarah Miles?

Brandy looked like Ros in Game of Thrones.

Worth noting that this sailor* (who also is pretty much exactly what I picture) is circa 1880s at the earliest, and absolutely did not work a boat during the “Age of Sail.”

*I mean general look/costume, not this specific dude, who can be dated to a lot later based on his wristwatch and the fact that he’s in a color photograph.

And he’s in a movie set in 1974

But yeah, give him a peacoat and it works for 1800s-present. The timeless merchant sailor look.

Put a yellow rain slicker on him and he could hawk fish sticks.

Oh no! The sailor was a Gorton’s fisherman?!

Not as glorious as whaling, but it pays enough for engraved lockets.

I’d argue it looks dated for anything after the 1980s. For a modern sailor, I’d expect hi-vis gear and a hardhat.

No! She wears a knee-length khaki trench coat with the belt drawn tight and her wavy brown hair falling over the turned-up collar. She walks through the silent town pensively in her sensible low-heeled shoes with her head down, her hands trust into the coat’s deep pockets, and her white purse slung over her shoulder, moving through the pools of light given off by the old-fashioned incandescent pillar-mounted streetlamps.

It wasn’t unusual at all, if the extremely common practice of unmarried women tending bar a decade or so later is anything to go by.

And I’ve always figured that the sailor gave Brandy the chain, but she was the one who had an engraver put his name on the locket. Kind of a private gesture to her undying (although hopeless) love for him.

Ahh, yes: the pic that launched a thousand memes.

I’ve always wondered if it was staged. I bet it is, but if not it was spur-of-the-moment genius on the photog’s part.

From Know Your Memes:
On November 1st, 2015, the source image, taken by photographer Antonio Guillem, was posted on the stock photo database iStock under the description “Disloyal man with his girlfriend looking at another girl” **

The photo was part of a series by the photographer, using the same models. You can see some of the others at the link.

Nailed it!

Does a “western bay” have to be on the west coast? It could be Bristol though. I’m another person who visualized it as during the age of sails.

As to B,DBAH - I see looking at the lyrics that I missed a few things, and assumed that Billy was a draftee, and she was asking him to keep himself safe rather than show off. Hard to say from the song, but I didn’t know it was from England originally. Did GB have a draft?

Great cite / site. Thank you. Now I sorta need the rest of my day back.

Everything is west of somewhere.
