That third Costa Rica goal was superb, great through-ball, lovely touch to finish. Not every great goal is a net-burster. What the hell does this mean for the group? It is wide open regardless of the result later. Also, doesn’t this mean that Suarez has to play against England? Heck of a gamble when you think he obviously wasn’t fit enough to come on when they were 2-1 down. ---

Also very high scoring up til now, average is 3.66 goals a game… if the two good goals from Mexico would have stood, it would have been a solid 4 goals a game! Average in World cups is usually about 2.7. ---

Red card against Uruguay’s Pereyra for a rather nasty kick to a Costa Rican attacker. Is this the first red card of this WC? Also, the game is over: CRC 3 - URU 1. Totally unexpected, group D is now a free-for-all, I think! ---

Yes, Costa Rica were better, clearly. Suarez might not have helped. I’m cheering for England in a big way. But … really anyone’s guess. Horrible first half. Dirty, low-quality football. I’m glad I stayed for the second, though. Once they scored, Uruguay never really looked interested, but Costa Rica were very entertaining in the second half. The good news is, of all the matches I’ve seen in this World Cup (about half), these two teams are the only ones I thought England could beat while watching them play. And I must say, it was nice of Pereira to get himself suspended for their match against England on Thursday with one minute to go. ---

Wow, what a result for Costa Rica. It would have been a very different match with a fit Suarez, but if my aunt had balls, etc. Also, after some really awful refereeing displays yesterday, I thought Geiger (USA) in the first match was excellent, and Brych (GER) in this match was also quite solid–good penalty call for the CRC wrap-up in the box, good sending off at the end, and I have a hard time faulting referees and ARs for missed offside calls that are a matter of inches and only seen on slow-mo replay with freeze frame and computer graphics. Hopefully this continues tonight. ---

Non gameplay question: Has there been much discussion/blowback in general out there over the social conditions in Brazil and what they’ve been doing to (IMO) isolate the World Cup and its site from its poverty issues? ---
