Much as I enjoyed seeing Costa Rica (I have cousins from there) beat Uruguay, it’s hard to see how this “opens up the group”. If anything, it just makes it more likely that the two teams going through will be England and Italy. ---

At once you see the problem with England and the problem of England. They have masses of pace so must play on the counter. But defensively we are not great, so inviting the opposition into us always runs the risk of conceding. Hence going one down and almost immediately pulling it back. ---
