If Nigeria win this it opens up the draw a bit for the team that comes second in G, which of course could well be the US. You’d be looking at Belgium in the next round, then the winner of Nigeria vs. maybe Switzerland. Next stop the semi-final! And also makes the knockout stages even more unbalanced. Holland would be the only traditional major power in their entire half of the draw. ---

Avoid brazil until the final too. ---

Messi has one nice free kick saved by the Nigerian keeper, then three minutes later he gets another attempt, and puts it in the net beautifully. 2-1 Argentina. ---

Now that Bosnia & Herzegovina are 2-0 up against Iran, Nigeria are safely through to the next round. Iran hasn’t managed a goal all competition, so i doubt they’ll be able to manage 3 in the next half-hour. Messi’s getting a well-deserved early shower. ---

I don’t know whether it’s because of being inspired by higher quality opposition, or that they suffered from first game nerves in their opening match, or something else, but Nigeria are finally showing the creativity and flair I had been hoping to see from them. Enough that I feel they absolutely deserve to move forward. Argentina of course we expected a lot from, and they are indeed looking better and better. I still wonder about a certain defensive frailty that they seem to have… ---

Yes, Nigeria look like they belong in the next round, now. Speaking of - how much would it take to bribe Fifa into replacing Greece and Uruguay with teams drawn by lot from a pool of : Croatia, Australia, Ivory Coast and - if they don’t go through, Ghana? Now there’s a way to improve the tournament, while still staying true to Fifa’s “spirit of the game” by involving bribes. ---

Is it possible to break an arm with a soccer ball? The Nigerian who had to be stretchered off looked like he at least dislocated his elbow. An arm should not wiggle like that. Yuck! The Argentine defense looked pretty shocking today. Awful awful awful. At least Agüero left early so maybe they’ll give him a rest for a while. He really shouldn’t be starting in his condition. And I’ll note that Higuaín was totally invisible once again. ---
