And da Silva was out of office for 12 years in between presidencies. Still, this and the mess with Dilma Roussef’s presidency does suggest a succession factions problem in the Workers’ Party: what happens the day there’s no Lula either atop the ticket or standing behind it. ---

Totally, practically the first thing I said to my wife after we finished dancing with joy when it was confirmed that Lula won was “The fact that an 80 year old man needs to keep going to the line to save the left in Brazil is infuriating, how come there’s NO ONE ready to step in his shoes?” ---

But it’s mostly the exception rather than the rule in the U.S. and Europe it seems to me, while down here the exceptional thing is when a successful leader has a successor ready to step in when he or she retires (IF they retire, because they tend to hold to power until the grave) ---

That’s what I fear, not that’s he’s going to try, he absolutely will, the fucking traitor, but that Trump actually will hear him. If you want to know why people sometimes sympathize with horrible regimes like Iran think on this, if Iran had rolled over for Trump it’s very probable that Brazil would be in the crosshairs right now. ---
