During the cocktail party in Holly’s apartment, Martin Balsam’s character asked Paul, “Well, what do you think? Is she or isn’t she?”

What is he asking about?

I think he meant, “is she a goer? [a wink & a nudge] Well, is she, huh? Is she a goer?”.

In Capote’s novella, Holly is a prostitute, a matter glossed over in the film. I don’t remember this scene, but it may be a veiled reference to her profession.

No, no. He was asking whether she was a phony or not. A real phony.

OJ Berman: . . . Is she or isn’t she?
Paul: Is she or isn’t she what?
OJ Berman: A phony.
Paul: I don’t know. I don’t think so.
OJ Berman: You don’t think so, huh? Well, (heh heh) you’re wrong. She is. Well, on the other hand, you’re right. Because she’s a REAL phony . . . Because she honestly believes all this phony junk that she believes . . .

Well they go through it again after a bunch of people arrive:

So listen, Fred Baby.

No, it’s Paul baby.

It is? I thought it was Fred baby.

Answer the question - is she or isn’t she?

What?

A phony.
It concludes with some stuff about how she is a genuine phony - she thinks all the phony stuff is real.

Now that I am reminded it’s pretty neat stuff and needs another watching.

If only I had a punk version of _Moon River_.

Not to mention it would only be 30 seconds long at 220 bpm.
