I knew all Reality shows were partially scripted.

Turns out _Breaking Amish_ is a total fabrication. It’s true they came from Amish families. Years ago!

All that crap in the promos showing them walking with amazement in NY? These people have footprints all over the Internet.

I recorded these two episodes. Sure glad I didn’t bother watching them. This show is such a blatant lie.

Another article. There’s quite a few articles out there. It didn’t take long for reporters to uncover this story.

I’m shocked that a production company couldn’t waltz into an Amish town and convince a bunch of kids to leave without alerting their parents. I am equally shocked that an Amish underwear model is apparently not a thing.

There have been several other good documentaries on the Amish. There was one that filmed some Amish teens during the time they could experience the modern world. They wore jeans, T Shirts, listened to the radio, and even drove cars. Most of the teens elected to stay Amish and get baptized. A handful left the community. There was another documentary that featured Amish that had left the order. It focused on the emotional conflict of leaving friends and family.

The majority of younger Amish (under 40) are very much aware of the modern world. Thats why my b.s. meter went off with the _Breaking Amish_ promos. Being amazed by electricity and lights? The Amish see electric lights all the time in businesses and stores they visit. Some Amish work in businesses with electricity. They’ve seen people using cell phones. They do live in the modern world. They just choose a simpler life.

Gosh! Next I’m going to find out that Abby and Brittany aren’t really conjoined twins, that the Duggers just round up various neighborhood kids when the film crews are there, and that Jon & Kate really only had 2 kids.

The Amish quite often are willing to have the homes of the non-Amish they hire electrified – it makes it easier to hire them. Years ago I read one such hired hand’s droll comment that his employer always seemed to drop by when MASH was on.

And there are many different Amish communities with different rules. Some even allowing electricity in the home I think.

My father bought a piece of specialized farm machinery from an Amish guy in Pennsylvania. He went to pick it up and was surprised to walk in the guys shop behind his house and see him working on a computer. His community allowed electricity for work, just not in the home.

Penn Teller has a podcast and just interviewed an ex Amish listener last week. His family always hired a driver when going to town and the people in the community would fly in an emergency but would take busses for other travel needs.

I’m reminded of a friend of mine who was on the reality show Average Joe (another one most of you have never heard of) and he told me that before they started the contest the film crew basically made a catalog of each of them showing various emotions. i.e. “Show me your surprised face.” “Show your angry face.” etc.

He said he couldn’t believe how the editing totally changed the show when he finally got to watch it.

[Devil’s Playground](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293088/) is an interesting documentary about Amish teens and the period when they are allowed to be “in the world” and then decide if they are willing to commit to Amish life. I grew up near a (fairly strict) Amish community so have an interest in the culture.
