What?
LOL
Pause it at 00:00:19 and look closely at the bottom of the image.
You can see it a little better in this video. It’s the trademark line that appears on the screen at around ten seconds into the video.
Anybody know what Walt was doing in the oven in the lab? Was he synthesizing ricin from the beans or making it more potent or… what exactly?
Per wiki, ricin is a naturally occurring substance from Castor beans and is most lethal when inhaled; “Oral exposure to ricin is far less toxic and lethal dose can be up to 20–30 mg/kg”.
Jesse wants a dad so bad it’s pitiful. I think he was majorly touched when “Mr. White” (who he still calls Mr. White) said “If you kill Jesse I won’t work for you”, and now he’s latched onto Mike. I may be wrong, but Mike seems to be warming to Jesse a bit- a long stretch from viewing him as a son or even a protege, but he seems to have a bit more respect for him than when he was originally ordered to start letting him tag along; does anybody else have a take on the Mike:Jesse relationship?
Mike said he’s going to teach Jesse how to use a gun (that’s a Father/Son thing if I ever heard it). My guess is that Jesse will actually save Mike’s ass in the coming week or two. ISTM Gus is investing some money in Jesse. He’s not just tagging along. It’s clear that Walt can run the lab by himself so if Jesse was just tagging along there wouldn’t be any need for him anymore, right? Also, if Jesse really does get Mike out of trouble and Mike says something along the lines of “Thanks kid, you really saved my ass back there” Jesse isn’t going to have any respect for Walt anymore. He’ll see that Walt’s been messing with his head, trying to turn him against Gus when in reality everything that evil that Walt sees in Gus is all in Walt’s head. Jesse might realize that Walt’s been using him as a pawn (in game of life). Hopefully he’ll tell him off too.
At least that’s what I’m guessing when I think about it ‘out loud’.
Jesse more than earned his keep when they dealt with the holed up meth heads. (“What are you digging for?”/“Oh, you know why, man… mind taking over for me while I take a leak?”) I can see him saving Mike.
Thanks. I was inattentive as usual.
Mike is definitely warming to Jesse. From what we’ve seen of him, outside of being a hitman, he’s caring and compassionate (his whole “half-measures” speech to Walt) and especially fond of his family (grand-daughter, I think?). He’s the opposite of Walt, in that his ego isn’t the mechanism by which his actions are driven. He’s empathetic, where Walt is self-absorbed.
The biggest thing, though, which Gus has obviously recognized, is that Jesse is seeking respect and validation. He’s not going to get that from Walt, who has spent the entire series demeaning him, his ability to manufacture meth, his girlfriend, etc. I think Mike was genuinely impressed with Jesse’s response to the fake stick-up. Jesse being told to “smoke up” was the only praise he’s received in the whole odd year or so that he’s been cooking with Walt, with the possible exception of when Walt begrudgingly admitted that Jesse’s cook was pure.
I think Jesse can see through Gus’ ploy, which is why he doesn’t have to think very hard about killing him. I’d wager that as the season progresses and Jesse and Walt continue to conspire against Gus, it’s going to be harder and harder for him to do something that would put Mike’s life in jeopardy. If Mike is alive at the end of the season, it will be in part due to Jesse’s appreciation for him.
Heyyy, I know that was an episode or two ago but I completely forgot to ask - what was that about anyway? I don’t think I ever figured out why he was digging.
I think he was just playing on a tweaker’s paranoia, ability to be easily led, and irration.
Tweakers are obsessive compulsive. And when they’re high, they have a lot of frenetic energy that needs an outlet. That’s one of the reasons why their teeth degrade quickly (from being grinded) and why they have open sores on their body (from repeated scratching). There have been a couple stories, and at this point I’m unsure if they’re an urban legend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were true, of stay-at-home mothers taking methamphetamine so that they can do housework. They ended up scrubbing the place from top to bottom.
Jesse knew that he could channel that type of behavior for his own benefit.
I know a zillion people who have used meth for expressly that purpose. It’s like Mr. Clean meets the Flash. You know how you spot three tweakers in a supermarket, don’t you? They’ve got the cart upside-down and they’re trying to fix the wheel.
I don’t know if it’s urban legend, but I’ve heard that some hard core tweakers will actually ingest the stuff that comes out of their sores because it gives them a buzz.
All this talk about Jesse and loyalty, I wonder if it goes both ways…
Assuming for a second the cops aren’t dirty and Fring was just hiding in plain site, if they take him in to custody, does he give up Jesse? Does he have anything to even point the cops to Jesse?
… and maybe being taken in to custody is the thing that saves his life, and allows him to be removed from the cartel conflict for a bit, thrusting Mike, Walt, or Jesse forward, without removing him from the ultimate resolution of the show.
He might not be able to pin Gale’s murder on him but he could for the meth making. Jesse’s prints would be all over the lab; even though they wear the space suits they come in wearing street clothes and without gloves.
Usually, though, when someone gives up another person to cut a deal, it’s someone higher in the organization. For Gus Fring to give up Jesse would be like Bernie Madoff giving up his barber for unreported income. In other words, who cares what Jesse did? (On the other hand, I’ll bet that the cops will be interested in Walt’s actions.)
Not crystal meth, but housewives in the 50’s and 60’s would take prescribed amphetamines for that purpose. It was seen as a cure for “malaise.” (Another popular use was weight loss.)
Not to take the conversation off track, but what happened to the whole Beneke story line? Has it just been dropped?
I assume Skyler quit that job at some point but I don’t recall a specific mention.
Were they going somewhere with the business of Beneke cheating on the company’s taxes? I wonder if that’s going to play some part in the story line at some point. It doesn’t seem like they would have thrown that in there for nothing.
I suppose it’s possible they were going somewhere with it and then changed their minds.
Walt was staring at Walt Jr.'s Beneke coffee mug a couple of episodes ago.
