Breaking Bad 4.07 "Problem Dog" 8/29

They discuss the product placement of the video game and Jr’s car in length on the Breaking Bad podcast. Fascinating stuff.

I have a question, having recently re-watched the episode on AMCTV.com.

When Saul is putting Walt’s payment in his safe, there’s a camera shot from inside the safe as Saul is talking to Walt. What are those rectangular objects we see – they’re audio cassettes, aren’t they? Why does Saul have nearly a dozen of them stashed inside his safe?

Maybe the cassettes contain the contents of recordings from bugs? Maybe they’re video recordings? And Saul wasn’t putting money into the safe, he was taking money out. So obviously Walt keeps some money stashed in Saul’s safe.

Whoops, you’re right. I completely missed the point of that scene. I thought Walt was paying Saul his cut of the money. So I’m guessing Gus gives the money to Mike who gives the money to Saul who gives the money to Walt?

I’m wondering if we’re supposed to read anything significant into Saul having those cassette tapes, or if it’s just something that illustrates how shady Saul can be.

Life imitates fiction.

I think the DEA being in on it with Gus is more conceivable than we are giving it credit.

Something that always struck me is that we never found out who warned Hank that he was going to be attacked. SOMEONE knew he was going to be killed and also had the means to contact him. If Gus was the one who called, he’d needed to have gotten Hank’s cell phone somehow. If he got it from Walt or Mike, I doubt they would have hidden the identity so carefully. I think it was Hank’s boss. He either found out from Gus what was going to happen and intervened or Gus warned Hank and got his contact info from someone in the DEA.

I think the DEA mole is more likely, simply because it’s good practice for someone in Gus’s business to keep tabs on the enemy. And Gus isn’t complacent.

Agreed. The white-haired dude looks totally shady. I don’t think we really know a whole lot about him since he’s been a pretty minor character so far, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a bigger role this season (and/or next).

That nice, framed photograph of him and Gus shaking hands? It’s either an indication that:

A. White-haired dude is a total sucker who had no idea how much he’s being played
B. White-haired dude is in on it

I’m going for B.

Did they even talk about trying to find out who made the call? I don’t remember.

When Walt was delivering the money to Skyler at the car wash, and she said something like, “where am I supposed to put it?”, I realized for the first time what a huge problem that would be. Not just the logistics of stashing it, but how to determine what is OK to spend. And how to restrain yourself from spending too much of it.

Were I in that position - having a shitload of unexplained money - I’d probably worry myself sick mulling over the multiple problems that go along with it.
