Everything I can find mentions breakaway glass used “where using real glass would be more dangerous, such as diving through a window or breaking a bottle on a person” . It looks like these days they use resin or paraffin based “glasses”, and it seems like they’ve been using that instead of sugar since the mid '80s.
Movie sets are controlled environments, I don’t see any reason they *wouldn’t *use real glass when there weren’t going to be people around. I’ll admit that my experience comes from explosive testing ranges, where I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands of windows blown out (and in); I’ve never been on a movie set.
