I didn’t know my grandparents either, but was happy for and somewhat envious of my brother’s kids, who grew up knowing and being loved and adored by both sets of grandparents (along with a great-grandmother, an aunt on their mother’s side and me, their uncle on their father’s side). The more people who love and spend time with any kid, the better. ---

I don’t see this as sad at all. Everyone dies. She died in possibly a better way than 99 percent of us can ever imagine living and leaving. It was sad when someone’s mother was killed by a drunken driver at a young age. This … this isn’t sad. It’s just life, and it’s possibly even the opposite of sad, considering how most of us are going to end up going. I just spent four weeks with my parents, who are 10-15 years younger than Elizabeth of Windsor. They are not badly off, but their late years aren’t going to be as comfortable as hers. And me, I’m facing a pretty grim downhill to my life, and not much to show for it. So all things considered, this isn’t sad at all. ---

She also seems to have passed from walking around and smiling to dead in two days. A lot of people suffer more than she did when they die. I feel a little sad for me. I liked having the queen around. But it was bound to happen, and her actual passing seems about as good as it could have been. ---

Gotta say, it hadn’t occurred to me to worry about the dogs. They could go to someone in the family, or heck, to whichever servant was actually talking care of them every day. I’m sure they will also be sad she’s gone, but they’ll be cared for. ---

I wasn’t super concerned about the corgis, not even thinking about them until someone else brought them up. Still, finding out they went back to the people who gifted them to the Queen and who had been taking care of them before was still a nice thing to hear. ---

Has been announced that there will be a [national holiday in Australia on Sep 22nd](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-11/national-day-of-mourning-queen-death-to-be-public-holiday/101427050) QEII’s loyal Australian subjects will be totally stoked that possibly her Majesty’s last impact in this Dominion is to give us a long weekend. As a curiosity, the cashed up bogans of Western Australia celebrate the Queens Birthday holiday on Sep 26th. Most of the civilised portion (such as it exists) of Australia have already had our 2022 Queens Birthday holiday back in June. As nothing inspires the average Aussie so much as a long weekend, I suspect the sandgropers will not give up their birthday holiday even out of respect that the celebrant has passed on and thereby will become the first province in the Commonwealth to celebrate the Kings Birthday. ---

I’ve been wondering about Prince George. He is only 9 years old. I wonder if he understands who he is and the role he will have to play. I don’t have kids so I don’t know if he is old enough to understand that one day he will be going through all of this pageantry after the death of his father. That’s pretty heavy for a kid. ---

I blame myself for the queen’s death. Back in 1996, I had to fly from Bangkok to Japan. But the road to the airport was shut down for the queen and Prince Philip’s motorcade as they drove upcountry during their Thailand visit that year. I thought I would miss my flight and uttered a death curse on them both. As it turned out, I made my flight, barely. But I did not revoke the curse. And 26 years later, they’re both dead. Coincidence? Not bloody likely! RIP, Queen Elizabeth. You were one classy lady. ---

Over the weekend, President Biden and his wife formally were invited to the funeral, but aren’t bringing any sort of delegation. Someone on CNN said that if they cram as many seats as possible, the funeral venue will only hold 2400 people, so some invitees may not be able to bring their spouses.
