In fairness, while the OP seems to have made a bunch of demonstrable mistakes in _this_ thread, I see that he posted in one [_other_](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=19331819#post19331819) thread yesterday, in which he relayed medical insights by – well, swapping in “effect” for “affect”, as well as misspelling “psychological” and “produce” and “noticeable”. At that, it’s possible that he was just misspelling “affect”. **Papertrail** , could you do me the favor of mentioning which type of junior-high error you made with “effect”? ---

Generally when I measure students’ accuracy I’m measuring word-by-word accuracy: do they read “reading” correctly as “reading” or incorrectly as “reaching,” “reads,” or “redding”? 2/3 of questions answered makes more sense. I think the word “accuracy” is a bit misleading here (will I get hit if I say it’s inaccurate?); it may be what’s officially used, but in our own speed-reading lessons it was called _comprensión_… understanding, comprehension. Some of the questions would specifically be worded in ways that avoided being close to the original text; there was no attempt at having people remember whether the budget for one project was USD1,353,412 or USD1,534,321 but you might be expected to remember that it was “between 1 and 2 USDM”. ---

I think we need more information before rushing to judgment. How old are you? What do you do for work? What are your educational credentials? Relationship status? Religious or non-religious? How are your personal finances? Are you good with money? ---

This is probably just my lower-than-210 IQ speaking, but I’m having a hard time taking the OP seriously here. Thanks to everyone who contributed useful information in the thread, nonetheless.
