Saying that she’s “sponging” off her husband is stupid, and needlessly mean. Spouses, and families in general, take care of their own. Her household income is whatever it is, but whether it’s derived 50/50, 80/20, or 100/0, she’s not “sponging” anything. It’s also none of your goddamned business.

Could it be that the subject at hand was Wal-Mart, where they do have the kiosk? Why are those people wasting the library’s computer resources, and the librarians’ time to show them how to use it?

Really, if someone needs help to apply online for a job at Wal-Mart, how are they going to be able to run the (computerized) registers and inventory systems should they be hired?

Please go back and read for comprehension.

The subject at hand is that people use computers at public libraries to apply for jobs; not that they use the public library computers to apply for jobs only at Wal-Mart. I don’t know where you are, but every place I’ve lived has other employers than Wal-Mart.

Water, trash and sewer are a separate bill. Road maintenance is from the gas tax. I don’t know about fire and police but since we have a high sales tax, it could come from there.

So, when someone points out your hypocrisy in that you’re tapping the very system other people are paying into you don’t get to justify it by saying you’re paying thousands of dollars for the education of illegal aliens, which you really can’t say with any certainty you – I mean, your husband – actually are.

Oh for crissakes. How many people in here are going to willfully ignore the difference between someone who has paid taxes for decades and someone who has hardly paid any taxes at all? Add to that you deciding that simply because I point out that I am still paying a ton of tax, you say I am trying to justify something. I’m not and never will because I don’t need to.

All of you touchy-feely people that go on about me not wanting to pay for a UHC keep ignoring the fact that I have paid and am still paying thousands of dollars a year to go to assistance programs that I never have and never will use. Could it be that it’s more efficient to go to the library where you can search and apply for multiple job openings at various establishments? It’s a convenience. Are you suggesting that they ought to be bypassing a public institution that is as much there for them as anyone else to job search in a more inconvenient and inefficient manner?

If it’s none of my goddamned business, she shouldn’t have posted it on the boards. These are my recollections from the mammoth “Anything else you motherfuckers need” thread and from here. She recieves SSDI. Her husband is the bread winner by a fair margin. They aren’t “rich” but are comfortable. She knows little of the family financial details though her husband has a blue card from a previous employer. She can’t even cook.

For someone who is so antiwelfare, she’s living comfortably at present with very little effort of her own. I admit that “sponging” is an unnecessarily harsh choice of words, but I honestly find that I have little respect for Curlcoat and less for her position on the matter of welfare. She sees the entirety of them as parasites worthy of nothing but her scorn as they pay less in taxes than she does regardless of their circumstances as they are all gaming the system somehow all the while cashing her own government checks that she may not even need as her husband does most of the earning. Oh kettle. How black thou art.

Lastly, you commenting on something being needlessly mean? We find ourselves once again in the kingdom of pots and kettles.

Well, for one thing, the kiosk things are generally out in the open with a lot of distractions and such, and nowhere to put any reference materials like, say, your work history which you may have to enter (among other things). At a library there’s usually some peace and quiet so you can concentrate on filling out the form accurately and without typos, and a table you can put your stuff on, should you have stuff like your job history and contact info for references in a convenient spot while you type it in. At the library you don’t have a bazillion people walking by looking over your shoulder as you type in your personal information and social security number, unlike the stupid kiosks at the stores.

> [@Carol\_Stream](#):
>
> Why are those people wasting the library’s computer resources, and the librarians’ time to show them how to use it?

Not everyone applying at the library needs help to use the computer, only some of them. Even those that do need help, it is not a “waste”, those computers and that access are for the citizens in the area served by that library. In other words, utilizing those computers for job applications is an entirely legitimate use of those machines. If you have a library card you are just as entitled to use those machines as you are to check out a book or ask a reference librarian to help you find something.

I started using computers in the mid 1970’s, I have some experience with them. I am a smart person, with a college degree. Nonetheless, some of the job application forms are so byzantine I have trouble navigating them because they are _badly designed pieces of crap_. Business computer, registers, and inventory systems (which I have used) are all MUCH easier to use that some of the POS job application software apps inflicted on job seekers.

I guess you haven’t had to look for a job for awhile, have you?

Andrew Carnegie - who left his children not a dime and instead used his fortune to endow public libraries and educational institutions to allow people to better themselves without needed wealth of their own to do so - is no doubt rolling over in his grave at the attitudes displayed by some of the people of the people in this thread. There seems to be a difficulty with the concept of a “public library” being for _all the public_ and not just the well off.

You really don’t know, do you? Who pays your City Council and other city officials? You have not (and cannot) demonstrated that your property taxes are near exclusively funding ESL and/or programs for school-age undocumented aliens. My daddy used to call that “talkin’ out your ass.”

See, but you don’t have to pay in taxes to be eligible for government assistance, otherwise how would people who were disabled enough from birth/childhood to never be able to work get assistance? How would a career homemaker recently widowed be eligible for assistance? There are so many other examples like this, but you don’t seem to care about those. You simply want to broadbrush all poor people as undeserving and dishonest. Sorry, but you’re simply wrong.

> [@](#):

I didn’t decide that; it’s your argument. Wait, let’s go back.
Uh huh. So because you think that my personal tax bite for all of the federal and state welfare programs must be small, I should just ignore it? Because it bores you? Hell, I’m spending thousands of dollars a year on just teaching the children of (mostly illegal) aliens to speak English, so why should I think that all of these handout programs cost me any less?
How about because you aren’t paying for those programs? Wait, were you just trying to justify your opposition to welfare based on how much property tax you pay? The mind truly boggles.

Actually, we’ve already established that you aren’t since you are no longer paying into the system. And, to be sure, you really have no idea how much of your local property taxes pay for local educational assistance programs.

> And that seem to be essentially useless. That right there is the basic problem I have with a UHC - our schools suck, our MediCal, food stamp, ADC, etc bill climbs every year, and you all want the government to take over yet another thing that individuals should be responsible for themselves.

Insofar as I can empathize with your frustration with your state’s budget crisis, you don’t really seem to understand (do you even care to understand?) what it is that UHC means to those who support it. I don’t necessarily want the government to take over all facets of health care. I want the government to make sure that the healthcare of those who can’t afford, or can’t obtain due to restrictions or unavailability, health insurance, is not neglected. I want a public option. I want affordable health care for every U.S. citizen. I want better healthcare outcomes for less money. Personally, I want to not have to forgo my needed medications because I can’t afford to front hundreds of dollars every month and cross my fingers hoping the insurance company decides to reimburse me. Personally, I don’t want to worry about my son not getting necessary medical assistance because he’s afraid to get stuck with bills he can’t pay.

Not everyone is as fortunate as you are and, hey, I can recognize that there are plenty of people out there even less fortunate than me. For whatever reason, and there are many, people suffer and die needlessly because they weren’t profitable to a private, for-profit insurance company. I’d find it appalling to deny them healthcare because they didn’t marry well, but that’s just me.

So, it’s in their best interest to allow the poor to starve, live on the streets, suffer untreated medical problems, and die? Were the poor much better off before the era of social services? Can you cite some examples of this ideal poverty? How far back to you have to go to find the utopia for the impoverished?

I never said that your experiences were mine. I simply pointed out that your perception as shaped by your experiences is limited and not in line with reality.

Eliminate poverty? That’s rich. People like you bitch and moan about every penny we spend to just ameliorate poverty.

The [_New Deal_](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Deal), the [_New Frontier_](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Frontier), and the [_Great Society_](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Society) were intended to eliminate poverty, people like you never miss a chance to point out that there is no Third Worldesque poverty in America, they worked. Trickle down? Not so much.

I fear, the only _solution_ to eliminate poverty that people like you would support, would be a _final_ one.

> If I can pay for it why do you have a problem with that? As it is, the only sort of “government assistance” we’re getting at the moment is subsidized health insurance, and as that is through the state of Indiana not one penny of YOUR tax money is going to pay for it.

And I imagine there are plenty of middle class people in Indiana that don’t appreciate you paying for internet access while they help subsidize your insurance. You don’t have some idea that I am the only person in the country that is tired of watching my taxes go up to the point that I fear we won’t be able to pay them, do you?

> Well, THIS poverty stricken household has one old car and one old pickup truck, both paid for, and both of which help bring money into the household in addition to being one vehicle per driver. Selling them would seriously impact my ability to make money so that would be utterly foolish.

You use both a car and a truck to get to work?

Which, of course, I didn’t say but you go right ahead and deflect.

Which, of course, I didn’t say but you go right ahead and deflect.

No, I said nothing of the sort. I can’t believe some of the weird shit you come up with.

> Great. We weren’t talking about property taxes. Try again. Welfare is a product of state/federal taxes. The thousands of dollars you pay to teach what you assume are (though given the intellect you’ve shown before, it’s hard to imagine you being wrong) illegal immigrants english has nothing to do with the topic.

Actually, it did but you go ahead and believe anything you want.

> I’m still curious as to how long a person has to pay taxes before they are allowed to go on welfare. You keep referring to yourself as deserving because you’ve paid taxes for 30+ years and those on welfare as having paid very little taxes. What sort of duration/amount level do you see as appropriate for someone to be able to get federal assistance?

I’ve never said that I think there is some magic duration/amount. I have been very clear thruout all of this that it is those people who cannot be bothered to be responsible for themselves that I am tired of supporting, not every last poor person.
