Bricker's betting gambit

Yep, that sums up my take as well. I have no problem with the “betting gambit” (done it myself a number of times), but please take any discussions about the value of betting elsewhere.

There’s a noticeable problem with people saying stuff for purposes of moral and intellectual preening, or to save face, even if deep down they don’t seriously believe (or don’t even understand) the position they are taking.

Bet challenges do shine a light on this conduct.

Do you do this in real life conversations very often-introduce betting to make people back up their statements?

How dare you? I talk about my feelings, and you introduce facts, and statistics, and stuff? That’s a deliberate attempt to minimize my feelings and unvalidate my worth as a person, and it’s probably classist too – not everyone can afford your fancy “training” in “statistical” “analysis.”
