My husband and I settled on just closing the whole lid. Same amount of effort from either user, and keeps things from falling into the plumbing. ---

always put the lid down. also a german insult is “sitzpinkler” , so very fun. means a man who is seated while peeing. ---

Another reason to keep the lid down is that it reduces the chances of accidentally dropping something in there, that you either have to fish out (not fun and it might be ruined) or you don’t realize it happened and it causes a clog. ---

I think of drinking from the toilet as more of a larger-dog thing. A lot harder for a cat to reach the water in the bowl without falling in.
