I feel really sad that - as a European - I immediately knew what the thread title meant :(. But tyes, I’m shocked as well, who knew teenagers could change their minds about wanting to spend the rest of their lives with someone… ---

So it looks like Bristol Palin and Levi “rink rat” Johnston have parted ways. Bristol apparently didn’t like her baby spending time with Levi’s “white trash” family. Classy stuff. I’m rather happy that, if the relationship was not sound, they ended it. I’m rather sad that what really should be a private event in the life of a teenage girl has become a talking point to illustrate the hypocrisy of the religious right. I said this back when - either Sarah Palin was naive enough to believe that the media would ignore her pregnant unwed teenaged daughter, or she was a bitch enough to be willing to sacrifice her daughter and let her become national gossip. If my sixteen year old daughter were pregnant, I’d be stepping out of the limelight, not cranking up the voltage. ---

Whether any of the media actually use the press release is another question. (I’m not a journalist, but I’d guess that for every press release they use, they file at least 10 in the circular filing cabinet next to their desk.) ---

My second reaction was shock at my first reaction. I am glad for their sakes that they had enough sense to end it if they knew they weren’t going to be happy. I am very sad for young Miss Palin. It has got to be tough to have this sort of thing splashed on the front page of nearly every paper. ---

Bristol Palin has done nothing wrong - at the worst she made a mistake that many many young women make of having sex with the wrong guy without adequate protection (and who really knows, she may be one of those hyperfertile ‘we used a condom and the pill and I was tracking my temperature and I still caught’ women.) Yet that her mother ran for Vice President on a platform that tends to be intolerant of people who make that very mistake makes her story relevant and means she will not be allowed to live it privately - possibly not for several years.
