Predominantly though, the Australians were led by their own Commanders (apart from Birdwood who was British). However, at the 2nd Battle of Krithia the clown Hunter-Weston did sacrifice a lot of (Australian) troops unnecessarily. He was responsible for far more British deaths overall though. I’ve never considered Gallipoli to be the Lions led by donkeys thing though. Certainly the planning was poor in the extreme but I believe there are far greater examples of needless slaughter (such as Fromelles). ---
