I’ve known (and worked for!) people like **broomstick** , and after the questions about the facts of the story, we need to ask a bigger one. Did she read about the story or hear about it and make it her own? Or, did she really know the family well enough to say “I still miss the man…” and that she’s “happy to say his sons carry on his legacy, but they still miss their father every day.”
That implies a closeness that most from that area aren’t privy to, even if they are “neighbors”.

The ‘creative recollectors’ I’ve known will conflate things in their mind, to a degree that they come to truly believe whatever version of the story is the most sensational, or paints them in the most dramatic light.

I live in the area - as a matter of fact, that restaurant is just a few businesses down from my sister’s old hair salon. From all the coverage surrounding that murder, it appears that it was just a small time robbery/murder. His family alleged racial influences, but I have never heard of any evidence that that is the case.

In regard to the refusal to be on America’s most wanted, his restaurant was in a town called Merrilliville, which has been under attack from the bad citizens of Gary, who are slowly moving south into Merrillville and have destroyed the school system and property values. I am sure that the Merrillville police wanted that story buried as soon as possible, because of the location of the murder – it is near the south west border of the town, on the opposite side from Gary, and they don’t want people to think the entire town is infested with criminals. I will further note that the neighborhood directly behind that business plaza is known as “Drug America”, a takeoff on its actual name of Young America. In addition, the entire area is surrounded by section 8 housing and has taken a serious hit.

Sateryn 76 - former 20 year Merrillvile Resident

ETA: that restaurant is about 20 minutes away from where I believe broomstick lives – not in her “neighborhood”

You are correct and I suck.

The shooting occurred the morning after, “Local law enforcement and FBI officials prayed for peace with area Muslims one Friday night at a Merrillville mosque to mark the impending fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.”

I admit that it’s not clear whether it was a hate crime or not, but if it wasn’t it was a botched robbery. They happen. The family maintains that the crooks missed a thick wad of bills in a desk that they rifled through. And the daily preparations were a little off apparently. I maintain the family’s reasoning is not unfounded.

I dont get the family’s reasoning at all.

How does the notion that it was a hate crime explain either of these supposed anomalies? Why does a guy committing a hate crime rifle through drawers and leave thick wads of bills? And how would that account for a change in when the pita was made for the day?

I take it the argument is that a robber would have located the large stash of money and not stopped at ~$150. Now the robber could have been on drugs. But ISTM that these anomalies deserved investigation. Whether they received investigation isn’t clear from the articles.

But if the claim is that the guy rifled through those very drawers, then whoever it was was looking for something. What would a hate crimes guy have been looking for? And even if the guy was really not primarily motivated by money, it doesn’t make sense for the guy to just leave it after he already found it anyway in the drawer.

Bottom line is that whatever the guy’s motive was, he missed the money despite (allegedly) looking through that very drawer. I don’t see why one type of guy misses it more than the other.

I don’t see what the police could add by investigating the anomaly. I mean, I suppose they could possibly confirm that the guy really rifled through that drawer if they have fingerprints connected to the murder. But that would still leave them at a dead end as to why he missed the money.

Her first post in the thread, Oh Assholey Trollie, mentions her memory of something that happened in her neighborhood of someone she knew. Thats right, Lite-Brite, memory of what happened in her neighborhood… a murder that happened 8 years ago.
A Memory of 8 years ago. Read it again. Still don’t get that? Go Read It Fucking Again.

When **Surreal** tried to subtley play the “You’re A Liar” card, she posted a second time about it, an article to effictively prove that, yes, this man did exist and yes he was murdered. Her only error she admitted in the third post was saying
that she thought the family found him when an employee found him. That’s the point which you so gleefully harp on, Troll.

Now… imagine knowing a person who died violently. Tell me that normal people will go up to the greaving family (at the Viewing perhaps?) and grill them about who discovered the body. No, normal people don’t do that.
Ignorant Internet Trolls with Zero social skills might (or might say they might), but in reality that doesn’t happen too often.

(Perhaps that’s a shame, as the ass-kicking that would follow would be both well deserved AND entertaining.)

You see, just because you Read it 15 minutes ago, Dr D’Anconia, doesn’t mean it Happened 15 minutes ago. Now… diddums I spoon-feed that to you enough that your small mind can comprehend it and still chew Hubba-Bubba gum? :dubious:

Perhaps you ARE mistaken, **Bricker**. That was the thread. I said he posted in it, not that he started it. That’d be your first error, **Bricker**. Thanks for admitting it.

The discussion was about Ambivalid, about a wheelchair, and assuming someone in a wheelchair needed 24-hr care. Here’s a quote from him:

Now **Bricker** , as a make-up question to off-set your mistake, from that same thread here is an easy question:

In the thread titled “Ambivalid”, who… either posting or mentioned in that thread… actually uses a wheelchair…?

No help from the audience. You have 30 seconds. **cue Jeopardy music**

I’m sorry, but I am still confused. You are quoting his comments about “progressive tax rates,” and I asked about your accusation that he inveighed against the capital gains tax.

Those are different subjects, as you are undoubtedly aware.

So again I ask: where is this attack from D’A against capital gains tax? And in what way does his denial of wheelchair users’ per se need for 24x7 care constitute “picking on?”

Let’s go to the original quote:

Banded stacks of cash in the office desk were untouched, Ghassan Mohammed said, even though the drawers were opened.

Together with the $150 stolen, that looks like a sloppy way of trying to make it look like a robbery.

Heh. I guess I’ve watched too many late night movies. Performing a hate crime while simultaneously making it look like something else doesn’t sound right. I wasn’t thinking hard enough: while (say) a disgruntled employee might want to paper over a true motive, it’s harder to see why a hate crime perp would do so. Unless the $150 theft was done on an impulse. But then, why the opened drawer?

Do you somehow believe that “progressive tax rates” is the same issue as “capital gains tax?”

That must be it.

They are quite different. A capital gains tax is a tax on the extra money you earn when you sell something for more than you paid for it. Progressive tax rates are, in general, tax rates that are lower for lower incomes. A capital gains tax can be regressive or progressive.

There’s no shame in not knowing things. The shame is in steadfastly refusing to admit error and learn.

I am still open to seeing some other link in which D’Anconia criticized the capital gains tax. But the only “proof” you adduced had nothing to do with capital gains.

You’re mad and embarrassed now, and that probably means you’re even less likely to want to admit error. But the problem with simply doubling down on your mistake is that almost everyone reading this knows what a capital gains tax is already.
