My father died at 7:30 Eastern time this morning. He was at home, he was not in pain, it was a peaceful passing, and while not all the family was able to be present he was not alone. ---

It sounds as if his passing was expected, even if nobody is ever “ready” for such things. I am sorry to hear of this and want you to know that if there’s anything we all, on the Dope, can do, to tell us. I will pray for you and your family in church this morning. ---

You have my sympathies. For what it’s worth, it sounds like your father passed on the way the vast majority of us would prefer to go out. ---

…and I’m back, being a bit more composed. Thank you for all your well wishes. My father was diagnosed with lung cancer back around January, so we knew things would end this way. He elected to forego aggressive treatment after various tests and discussions lead to the conclusion it would not significantly prolong his life but could make him extremely miserable before the end. At 86, there is only so much the body can withstand. Yes, he passed away as he wished. It was a lot of hard work for us to enable that. In the end it was worth the effort. Last Monday he was still able to take a few steps with a walker, sit with the family at a meal, and receive visitors. By yesterday he was no longer responsive. The final decline was quite rapid, but that’s probably how most of would prefer things to be. ---
