Well, I’m talking about a J2EE webapp, not an applet. So it runs on the server, not in the client’s browser. There wouldn’t be any access issues there.

Nah, if we’re talking java, J2EE is where it’s at. There are tons of frameworks being worked on all the time. If anything, applets are dead, except in some specific settings. Flash, activex, even ajax widgets are usually a better choice.
