I think that’s what might be interpreted as opening a speech with a joke. Not that it was funny, but I find it hard to believe that he’d be serious about comparing scratches to combat wounds. ---

It’s obviously meant to be a joke – it’s just that it’s spectacularly unpolitic, edging toward appallingly bad taste. Kind of like joshing with a guy who’s just had heart surgery that being a “uniter” rather than a “divider” means “when it comes time to sew up your chest cavity, we use stitches as opposed to opening it up.” Colbert is right – Bush could _really_ use Peggy Noonan’s services about now. Christ. ---
