Buckaroo Banzai

Bonzai is one of my all time favorite films. I have been looking for the book for years ( although not exactly actively) and haven’t had one sighting.

If they make BB into a series for TV it will probably suck and most people won’t get it.

Amy, all you have to do is break off that little plastic tab on the left side of your tape. (Hard to describe without pointing to it–just look at a tape after you hit ‘eject’ and the tape is hanging out the front of the VCR.) When you try to record on that tape, the VCR will refuse and eject the tape. It’s just like the write-protect tab on floppy disks. If you ever want to record on that tape again, just put a piece of scotch tape over the hole…

Sorry folks, Buckaroo Banzai put my entire family to sleep… One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

Oh, and by the way, I have a copy of the original shooting script. Bought it a convention years ago. Contains a few extra scenes, and a few lines of dialogue that were cut that explain some things in the movie that weren’t clear.

I have heard from several people that the script for the second movie was re-written and became Big Trouble in Little China.

Big Trouble in Little China was the sequel to BBA8D???

Man-o-Man! You set my eyes a-goggling with that!

When I saw Buckaroo, I thought it could have been an amazing cultural phenom – it had all the elements and moments of sheer style. However, it quickly fell flat for me. I kept thinking that I (or any number of people) could have made it an epochal archetype on a par with James Bond.

[Of course, I could never have gotten the project past a studio. I guess the real problem is that the project, as it should have been, could never have gotten past a studio.]

Big Trouble, on the other hand, has always been a private guilty pleasure. I loved it (and Kim Cattrall) while being quite certain it was pure trash. Admittedly I’ve never seen it sober. (It was on cable a few months after a painful protracted breakup with a girl I’d lived with for years. )

However… you also made me realize something about the intentions of the friend[1] who insisted we get liquored up every time we watched it (ACK! when a movie’s on cable it’s on at every hour of the day and night)… and now someone is going to have to die… if only “le petit mort” [2]
[1] A lovely girl, and one of my best friends for over a decade. It never occurred to me she was interested because she’d turned down several (polite yet unmistakable sincere) advances in our early years. Onlyt today, as I was recalling how we used to watch BB, did I see the clear signs! DANG! But she did have weird female thing about needing the man to be bold and brassy with his overtures the first time.

[2] French ‘the little death’; interpretation left as an exercise for the reader, since there are chillun’s around.

**Ooooo Buckaroo Banzai, one of my favorite all-time movies!!
