So I’m thinking of replacing my old system, and I’m thinking of doing it piece by piece. Any decent online sources for computer components; processors, motherboards, drives, memory, power suplies and the like? I’m probably going to recruit a friend to help me out, but I’d like to look at what things are going for these days (the last time I actually was following computer prices and such was 8 years ago).

Thanks all in advance.

Try [http://www.pricewatch.com](http://www.pricewatch.com)

It is a very well done PC component price tracking site. They even price kit systems and ‘bare bones’ boxes.

My best resource.

You also may want to spend some time on the [ars technica](http://http://arstechnica.com/) page. There is a ton of great information over there, and forums full of people who know what they’re doing with this sort of project.

I went to [http://www.googlegear.com](http://www.googlegear.com) and ordered a barebone system (MB, Processor, Memory, Case, Power Supply) for a pretty low price. Look under the “Systems” section.

However, when I got the system, the AGP slot was backwards (?!?!) and I couldn’t put my video card in. I returned the system to be replaced, so we’ll see what happens. I’m not happy that I have to pay to ship it back to them, though. They better ship it back FedEx 2-day like I paid for when I ordered it, too.

So basically, I don’t know if they’re good or not, but it’s there if you want to check it out.

My personal sources:

[http://www.z-buy.com](http://www.z-buy.com) They have some good prices on some stuff, and free shipping!

[http://www.newegg.com](http://www.newegg.com) for pretty much everything Z-buy doesn’t have for cheap.

[http://www.2cooltek.com](http://www.2cooltek.com) for cooling gear.

[http://www.mwave.com](http://www.mwave.com) for anything the above don’t carry.
