Burritos: Rice and/or beans?

That’s a wet burrito. Common in some places and unheard of in others.

Here in Jalisco in is known as a burrito ahogado, drowned burrito.

The only time I’ve ever seen it come pre-assembled is in a fajita burrito, which comes with the steak and grilled onions and peppers and fixin’s all wrapped up together.

Rice has no place on a burrito. Beans are practically a must. There are some specialty burritos where with all the other ingredients it’s ok without beans but beans always improve a burrito.

Also lettuce is disgusting and the only place it belongs is on the ground or in a bunnys’ tummy.

Burritos aren’t my favorite thing to eat. But I do like chimichangas, which are essentially the same thing. At the places I go to rice is served as a side dish, along with the tomatos, sour cream, lettuce, quac. And I eat everything on my plate.

I don’t dislike beans. But they aren’t critical to my chimichanga experience.

Never beans. I’ll put up with a little rice in a burrito, but I prefer to leave it out.

Understand, I’m a Louisiana boy–I love rice in general. Whatever these places do to it in the name of making it “Spanish”, though, is an abomination. (Cilantro rice is even worse, but that’s because of my taste buds, so I’ll live and let live there.) If they actually put good rice in the burrito, it might not be so bad.

In fact, I’m now pondering the potential of a rice and brown gravy burrito, possibly with bits of smothered fried chicken or steak mixed in.

Y’know what’s amazing, is a black bean burrito with pulled pork and NC vinegar sauce. I know I said I don’t like meat in a burrito, but goddamn that’s good eatin’.

And that sounds pretty good to me, but I don’t think I’d even recognize it as a “burrito”. I’d probably just call that a wrap.

Sorry, but this may be the biggest moderator fail of all time… there was no need to add another option that included that strange grain item that doesn’t belong in a burrito.

Ahhh…Rosa Maria’s. I’ve never even contemplated ordering one of their Garbage Burritos as a Large. The regular ones are so delicious I might overdose on goodness!

Yes, I agree. My burrito joint (Rachel’s Taqueria. Fifth Avenue and Seventh Street. Brooklyn. New York. Accept no substitutes, in Brooklyn, anyway) is very clear about what’s going in each variation. The take out menu also carefully lists the vegetarian options: spinach, corn, mushroom, blah blah. What DOESN’T it have? The meat options. Jesus, Rachel.

I just go by memory…various cuts of steer, pig, and chicken grilled or braised in different salsas and moles. But it’s a damn odd omission.

Me either, the regular is more than enough. I will order more than one, because they heat up well the next day.

Which is your favorite location? Mine is the original location.

I’ve eaten at both the SB location and the Redlands one. Redlands is closer, so it gets the most visits. Between that place and El Burrito, I am well stuffed.

Honestly, don’t care. Sometimes I want rice and beans, sometimes I don’t. Just don’t get any of that green vomit (aka guacamole) near my food and I’m fine.

Why on earth are some of you putting OLIVES in your burritos?!

Sliced olives, mind you. I wouldn’t, but I understand it. Probably got the idea from the 3 olive slices Taco Bell used to put on their enchiritos.

The flavorful rice my Mig always cooked with fresh tomato and chilies and magic? Yes. Sticky white rice? No.
Refried black or pinto beans? Hell yes. Fully intacts non-mush beans? No.

I don’t like a burrito with just meat: it’s boring and usually too dry (not enough fat, actually.)

Refried beans, YES. Rice? Sure.

Lettuce & tomato? Sure: that makes it a deluxe. Or they can be on top.

Covered in melted cheese and/or sauce? Yes, please. That makes it “wet”.

Deep fried? YES! Then it’s a chimichanga, a gastronomical delight.

A favorite local BBQ joint has a “burrito” on the menu but it’s really s great chimi. They serve it smothered in chili, which ruins the texture so I ask for that on the side.

And now my heresy: I prefer ground beef to shredded. Shredded tends to be too lean and I don’t like the texture. But I wouldn’t send it back for that.
