But not if the diesel sloshed forward at the meter right before they measured it, causing it to read nearly full and stay there when I returned it when the meter had gone back to normal .
The rental insurance is expensive because Enterprise wanted ~$15 a day on my Kia Optima rental; that works out to $450 a month! And I will have the rental for a month too while my poor Mazdaspeed3 is having tree damage repaired. No way I’m giving them $450 for insurance when my insurance already covers the rental.
You guys mentioned cell companies, but talked about hidden fees and stuff like that. What about the very concept of monthly minutes? You either have to buy what you don’t use, or you go over and get hit with unjustifiable rates.
I think a lot of scams, surely the best ones, make you feel like it’s your own fault and everything’s fair.
But suppose you slip up one month and pay a day late. From what I know of you I don’t think you would be likely to do that, but let’s just say something happened…let’s suppose you were traveling on business in Southeast Asia when they had the internet problems recently, and weren’t able to transact your business online. Is it really fair or necessary for the bank to jack up your interest rate and charge you $75, or whatever, for keeping their money an extra day? Some constant times interest would make sense, but the fees they charge seem to me to be just willful gouging. Yes, I know the contract says they can do that but I don’t think it’s right.
I think credit card issuers have them all beat by a mile.
My mortgage broker is actually quite good. He hasn’t charged me a single penny on either of the 2 mortgages I’ve had. He was able to find me a mortgage when I was a student with very little income. Wasn’t a very good lender, of course, because the only place that would give a student a mortgage was a “B” lender. More recently I decided to re-mortgage so I could get away from said “B” lender and take out an extra 10k to do renovations with. It was a very quick and simple process that landed me a mortgage with a much better lender. Good interest rate, good overall agreement with good flexibility. Didn’t collect a dime from it off me aside from any commissions. All I had to do was drive to his office and sign a few documents.
AT&T is the same company that killed the GPS service on BlackBerry because they didn’t want to launch a device that would seem superior (or be competitive) to the iPhone.

Please don’t support AT&T by purchasing an iPhone. If you do buy an iPhone, take it to a friend that’s good with hardware and get them to crack it so you don’t have to use AT&T.
Also, your iPhone will rack up charges from email, even when it’s turned off. So if you do buy an iPhone, make darn sure you disable data somehow.
Two options: Internet banking, or simply take your bill to your bank, and pay it there. I don’t know about you, but at my bank, I can make a bill payment at the atm. The only bill I cannot pay at the bank machine are any bills for my insurance company. I have to send a cheque in for those, which is no big deal. I’ve never been charged late fees with them. (State Farm, very good insurance company btw)
How is that any different than buying cable, and not watching HBO all day? Or going out to dinner, and not taking your leftovers home in a box. Or buying car insurance and going on vacation for a month in Brazil? Sometimes we buy a certain amount of stuff in advance to get a better deal on it. The alternative is a prepay plan, and we all know how much more -that- costs!
Not that I’m defending AT&T’s practices, but the iPhone demands a mandatory unlimited data plan on your bill. It’s part of the “iPhone data plan”, along with Visual Voicemail and 200 text messages.
I think what Red1980 is remembering is a story about a person that took their iPhone out of the country, it kept checking e-mail and racking up BIG roaming data charges.
Number 1: Restaurants don’t leave plates of food out in front of you and then count to see if you take your 500 and first bite. (Yes: you can call a waiter to ask how many bites you’ve had.)
Number 2: Maybe you have a good point that prepaid costs more. Maybe we all do get better deals on the backs of all those idiots who get screwed over. Sure, the companies make their profits, but we get a cut too.

Yeah, she should have taken more care with that. But it’s a dishonest way to do business and it’s pretty clearly designed to score easy money off people who assume that they’re only agreeing to buy the things they want.
I just noticed these charges for 2 months on my credit card today. They said they are checked or unchecked either in your profile or upon check out. No where did I notice these, so they are not that obvious maybe flashing parts for extra things are a distraction. Anyhow they reversed the charges very easily. I bet a lot of people call and complain about it. I’m going to have to be careful that what I am buying is the only thing on there. It is pretty deceiving either way.

Just FYI, there was a lawsuit 2 or so years ago; the results of which are that you do NOT have to rent your modem from the cable company. Now, on the other hand, I have no idea what their set-up is… so if you have a modem that isn’t DOCSIS 2.0 compatible, and they require that, they might tell you your modem won’t cut it. But you still have the option of buying your own 2.0 compatible modem.
Bellsouth goes almost that far. They simply can’t understand why I won’t use their DSL modem. It’s free (sort of) and is in fact a pretty nice modem (they sent me two trying to convince me to use them. Since I didn’t ask for them, they agreed not to charge me for the free modem…). Anyway, the reason they want you to use their modem is they retain control of the configuration. They can charge you if you have more than one or two computers on your wireless network. Since I insisted on my own DSL modem with my own password and my own setup, they leave me alone and I leave them alone. It is about half the price and 80% of the performance of cable.
