I have a childhood memory of touching a moon rock. I recall it was in a glass box with a small hole in the side and you could put a finger in and touch it. But I have no recollection of where this occurred. Does this sound familiar to anyone? eta: I’ve been to Johnson Space Center. Do they have an exhibit like that? ---

I would just love to hear the initial conversation between NASA and Boeing, Grumman and North American. “Look, we want you to build this honking great big rocket, fly it to the moon with a lunar lander in it but when we get there were just going to fly around the moon a few times and not actually land. Now, I understand that you have about 100,000 engineers and contractors that you’re going to let loose on this project, you can’t tell a single one about our little prank so guess what, they’re going to have to design and build a vehicle that can umm…actually land on the moon and come back”. ---

The problem is not proving that a rock is from the moon–the problem is proving that we got the moon rock by _landing and picking it up_, versus some sort of unmanned collection and/or a rock that was collected on the Earth (a meteorite). Having a rock from the moon isn’t proof that we went there any more than a Honolulu magnet on my fridge would be proof I went to Hawaii. Like I said, there’s lots of good evidence that we landed people on the moon–this just isn’t it. ---
