# Buttery Biscuit Base and monetization of mashup video content on YouTube

Does anyone know what YouTube’s stance is on monetization of videos composed of remixed/mashup/autotuned bits of popular broadcast content?

For example: [Buttery Biscuit Base](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfeyUGZt8nk) - this is composed entirely of clips from BBC’s Masterchef programme, remixed and set to an original beat.

Is this considered ‘fair use’? Can such a video be monetized on YouTube?

Fair use is pretty narrowly [defined](http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107). Your example could possibly be considered parody, and thus O.K. The U.S. Copyright Office suggests that if there’s any question, you should seek permission.

I believe (but I may be mistaken) that someone doing a legitimate parody for commercial purposes still has to pay the mechanical license fee, they just don’t need the explicit permission normally required for a derivative work.

There’s also [this](http://www.beatsuite.com/industry-news/youtube-signs-music-licensing-deal-to-share-ad-revenue-for-copyright-content/310), which indicates that there are agreements in place with rights managing agencies that give the copyright holders a piece of the ad revenue from that type of video.
