What, nobody’s going to make the obvious “leave the guns, take the Canoles” joke? Fine, I guess it’s up to me.

Hmm, let’s review:

> [@Second Amendment to the United States Constitution](#):
>
> A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, and point them at their new black neighbors, shall not be infringed.

Huh. I’ll be damned.

This is what should have cleared everything up in my mind.

New Homeowners: You see this key right here? Look what it does when I put it in the door. Magic. It opens. If I’m breaking in, tell me how I got this key.

The article mentions they went there to change the locks, and perhaps were in the process of doing so when Dumbshit and Neckbeard showed up to welcome them to the neighborhood. Simply showing a key may not have convinced them at that point.

Not just the house but 11 acres of land. I don’t know where the house is situated on the property but it seems like the good ole boys went well out of their way.
Also it’s not just that they pointed the guns. The armed men ordered them to obey their commands or they would be shot. Saying that while not holding a gun is a crime.

Ok, new dialogue.

Homeowners: See how this key I have fits in the lock that’s lying on the porch here? See the hole in the door where the lock used to be? See this new lock in its hardware store packaging? This process is known as “changing a lock.”

Well, a house on a large piece of land is one that is IMO much more likely to be burgled, particularly if it has been vacant for awhile. And I think INITIALLY the two idiots had noble intentions. Problem is they quickly took the bullet train to Stupidville, meet up with the cops there and all of them caught the next Concord to Dumbshit Acres, a suburb of Racistville, in the glorious country of Moronistan.

> This. While the armed idiots are entirely in the wrong, who would close on a house without meeting with your neighbors-to-be? You know, the people you’ll be bumping into off and on for as long as you own the house. The new family could have avoided the situation if they’d introduced themselves to all their new neighbors the previous week. Or declined to close after seeing who those neighbors were going to be.

I’ve never introduced myself to future neighbors. In fact I’ve never gone out of my way to introduce myself to neighbors at all. Often I’ll not speak to them until running into them by chance. If I don’t run into them by chance, I might never speak to them at all unless there was some specific reason for it. I’m sure that I’m not the only one.

>
> Not sure how the rules are in your area, but there are liability reasons over here and likely in Georgia on why the realtors do not give you the keys to the house; if you had the keys, chances are that it was a new home and not a formerly owned one.
>
> Still, even there the advice is to always change the locks of your new residence and I have to say that realtors just do not want to deal with the expense of driving to the place when supposedly you have a locksmith with you anyhow, “just go and change the locks” was indeed the advise from my realtor, but it may had happened in the OP case that the parents that helped the new home owner decided to save a few bucks and do the locks themselves.
>
> As it turned out, in my case, my father had experience with changing locks and once one is inside the home it is fairly easy to remove and change the locks, but that was possible because I told the realtor after that “just go and change the locks” advise to get their butt over to the new place and to open the door for us.
>
> Even though we had the legal permission to forcibly remove the locks, I rather had my father not to look like someone that was trying to break in.

1. A closing company does not package and sell loans. It handles the closing on a house.

2. Speaking as someone who bought a house not that long ago - a previously owned one, to boot - realtors do indeed hand you the keys. Much like buying a car, the fact of having the keys to the house is one of the ways you confirm that you do in fact own it.

We had a locksmith come by and change the locks rather than doing it ourselves, but that was because I wanted someone to do it right, not because I was afraid of looking like a thief. It’s my house, I bought it, and I have the keys.

Do you keep your deed with you in case one of your neighbors decides to come over and check at gunpoint to make sure that you do own your house? Heaven forbid, what if you RENT? How does anyone know you’re there legally?

Dang, I knew that, I just had a brain fart there. It was the loan company that later sold the loan to the bank. So still, no bank to call.

In your case, sure, but I have to insist, over here in Arizona the realtor was loath on giving me the keys, the theory I have is that the former owner gave them trouble and the keys they had were from locks that they installed, my guess is that if suddenly some items would be missing from my home that they would not like to see suspicions come their way.
