Buy U.S. made...

The concept the OP is talking about is autarky. It’s the principle that a nation should be economically self-sufficient - buying all its goods from within the nation itself.

Economically, it’s a bad idea. There are goods which it will be cheaper to buy from other countries; by buying those goods in your own country, your citizens will be paying more than the market value. Because your citizens will be paying more for these higher-priced goods, they’ll be buying less of other goods. So your producers are suffering because they’re selling less goods and your consumers are suffering because they’re paying higher prices. And it’s a self-reinforcing circle; the businesses that are selling less goods will need to either raise prices or decrease wages or lay off workers - all of which will lead to people having less money to buy goods with.

It would be disastrous, and already has been.

If US manufacturers are not forced to compete with international competitors, they will lag behind in terms of productivity, quality, and price. And US consumers will be forced to pay more money for poor quality and shrinking availability.

“Buying American” because you want to support your own countryman, regardless of quality, is like doing your kid’s homework for him: it is a recipe for disaster.

Take a couple of high school level Econ. classes and you’ll learn the answers to your questions. Lots of different and unrelated questions being asked.

No, no, yes, yes (what’s wrong with that?), why not?, what does money have to do with anything?

Interesting, that was the economic model for some of the worst basket-case nations and governments thru history.

OK so not a good idea. Thanks for the replies.

If the U.S. debt continues to increase, encouraging other countries to divest themselves of U.S. assets or slowly move away from the petro-dollar, then buying locally is inevitable.
