Buying a new TV, what is the BEST one to get?

Yes, barely. I moved mine by myself when I reorganized my living room. Most of the problems have to do with the fact that it’s a big ol’ rectangle 46" diagonal and the handholds are placed for two people to carry it, and not the fact that it weighs 80 lbs.

I really think you’re over-valuing the weight. How often do you move your TV?

ETA. Oh, I see. You’re worried about getting it home in the first place. Yeah, you’re not going to want to carry it around on the subway by yourself. Even with a friend, that would be… tricky. I’d get it delivered.

I looked around for awhile but couldn’t find what I think you should get - by far the
best LCD picture comes from “Full array LED with Local dimming”. That seems to be hard to find in sizes under 47". 40" TVs seems problematic to find period - a lot of brands seem to skip 37" to 42" to 47" with no stops in the middle.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I have it narrowed down to a 40" (or MAYBE 46") Sony Bravia full LED. I’m gonna shop around a bit, although I may just run to J&R or PC Richards on Saturday so I don’t have to wait for delivery.

I experienced that Best Buy bullshit when I went with my mom last Thanksgiving to get her Samsung LED. They actually told us that it HAD to be professionally calibrated (for $300 with a house call) before it would work. I told them I was her professional calibrator.

CNET’s Top 5 are all plasma sets, either Panasonic or Samsung.
If plasma isn’t your thing they also have a list of the best rated LCD sets and LED sets.

BTW, when I did online research, the Sony Bravia did not get that great a recommendation. There were others that were rated ahead of it in value for money. Of course that doesn’t mean they are bad, it is a point you may wish to research.

Okay, I’m going to get the Sony Bravia 40" EX620 tomorrow. Thanks for everyone’s help, I’ll let you know how it works out!

The Sony EX620 definitely gets the fusoya seal of approval. I haven’t even calibrated it yet (no point until I’ve had it on for a couple weeks, for the initial burn in period), and I’m drooling over this WNBA game on abc (I’m still amazed that a $20 set of rabbit ears can pick up 720p and DD5.1!)

obliguatory picture

One warning about this set - by default, the zoom mode is set to Wide Zoom, which means that the picture is zoomed in. I’ve heard this happens with other Sony TV’s too. Once I had it zoomed out, the picture got 10x better. The only remaining complaint is that if I disable an unused input, why does it show up greyed out on the input menu, rather than be hidden?
