Buying a star

I’d have to agree with Chronos that the money would be better spent for charitable reasons. I’m fairly sure the profit off of this venture goes straight into the bank accounts of the people that are operating this scam, whereas if it went to an astronomical society it’d go towards upkeep of equipment and funding discoveries. I’d be surprised if any of the companies offering this even bothered to check whether stars were assigned or not.

Hell, may as well tell them you bought em a $45 pet rock as well and you could sponsor an American school child’s food for a year with Blessings in a Backpack. Or you could buy 'em a fish, or a toy car, or loads of little things where the profits aren’t going to people that have willingly defrauded at least a few people.

And so why do you have to find another stupid thing to waste the money on? Why can’t you just put it in the bank or pay off you’re debts. Why do you have to donate it to something to justify not spending it. I’de never spend money to get a star named after me by someone, If I wanted one named after me and my kids we’de get together and assign names to some and pass it on from generation to generation in our little world within this big world. That’s free and just as real as a piece of paper. Oh my, I see “nameastarelive.com” is advertising on the site. I shouldn’t piss off the advertisers I guess.

Yeah, that’s the thing with disinvestment, one has the opportunity to spend the money as one wishes. But when one wishes to purchase something (rather than hand it to the banks, as their decisions for investment haven’t been exactly sound recently), I’d argue that when purchasing something that has no tangible benefit for oneself, it’d be better to further a charitable cause rather than line the pockets of a huckster. But there you go, I’m not a free market capitalist, I believe in human solidarity (perhaps those admissions were a non-sequitur, perhaps not).
