Buzzcut = 21st century combover?

I used to buzz cut my head. Now I shave it. I shave twice a week. It’s a lot less fussing and work than buzzing it (and probably better for my hearing). IOW, you’re wrong. Get over worrying about what other people do to their domes.

Do you shave your face twice a week too? That’s slacking, not “no fuss.”

I sometimes don’t shave my face on the weekends. The point is, if you shave your head occasionally, it serves the same purpose, without the pain that is buzzing your head. I suppose you could say it’s cheap, because I would do either myself. One problem with buzzing your own head, though, it that it’s a lot harder than you’d think to do a consistent job. Now, if MeanOldLady would consent to do it, then maybe I’d go back to that.

It seems to me, if you occasionally shave your head then you’re basically sporting a short buzzcut between shavings. In the Army, my roommate of a couple years went for the shaved bald look for awhile but he eventually went back to really short buzz because shaving it everyday was too much work. Hence, my opinion that if you’re sporting the shaved bald look, you’re tending to it everyday. Guys with a short buzz don’t do anything at all except buzz it once it week or two.

I also have my own electric clippers and have buzzed my own hair, and it’s not really that hard, although it’s nicer to go to a barber once in awhile and get my neck hair cleaned up better than I can do on my own.

If your clippers are too loud on your ears, I don’t know… try a better brand of clippers maybe? My Oster brand clippers are pretty quiet, and I keep them well oiled. I’ve been to barber shops where the clippers are really loud too.

Anyhoo, I guess I should use more smilies.

No buzz cuts are not just another style, if you’re going bald. It’s a way of capitalizing on the “shave your head” look. Most of these guys would not have a shaved head unless they weren’t already going bald.

That’s the key. It’s cool to shave one’s head if you have a full head of hair. That’s gutsy and bold. If you’re already going bald, that’s just a weak attempt to cover up the fact that you’re already bald.

Bottom line is you need to ask yourself, “Would you have your head if you weren’t going bald anyway?” If you answer no, than it’s not. And be honest, you don’t have to answer here. I have shaved my head, and I have a full head of hair. I looked terrible, but I thought I’d do it just for fun.

The fact is few people really look good bald. You have to have a really good symetrical face to pull it off. That is why hair is nice, you can shape the hair to complement a less than perfect face.

Gladly. The reason I started buzzing my then-bf’s hair is precisely because of this. I couldn’t stand looking at the patchiness, so I volunteered to buzz it for him.

What, in your opinion, would represent a ‘strong’ option for a man going bald then?

Well, he could grow out his horseshoe & whip it into dread locks. Or maybe braid it into a toupee to cover the bald spot. :smiley:

He’ll change his mind if he starts losing his hair. Easy to judge from on high.

Well, shaving it clean makes it impossible for anyone to know if you’re really bald, or how bald. A short buzz (like Patrick Stewart) says “yeah, I’m balding, so what? Think I can’t get laid?”

I think that, if a man is going bald, the really short cut is a way to “soften” it - it’s not completely shaved, but there’s not a stark contrast between the bald and not-bald areas - things just kind of blend together.

I really don’t care for a completely shaved head, there’s just something scary about it to me; at my age, it doesn’t look hot, just looks like “Uncle Fester”. Especially when combined with that goatee-mustache-soul patch scenario - I know it’s extremely popular now, but when I see that, I think of Lucifer, not an attractive image when I look at a man :slight_smile:
